The Texas Merci Boxcar, a gift to the State of Texas as part of the Gratitude Train, was received from France in February 1949. Today it is located on the grounds of American Legion Travis Post 76. The boxcar is cared for and maintained by the Grand Voiture du Texas and each year these members travel to Austin for an annual pilgrimage and pay honor to those who have sacrificed so much The Grand Voiture du Texas has initiated a program to protect the French Merci Boxcar and construct a permanent structure to house and display the boxcar for everyone to see year round. More information is to come on this project and questions can be directed to texasmerciboxcar@yahoo.com

Here is Taps played in its entirety. Melissa Venema, age 13, is the trumpet soloist.
The Original version of Taps was called Last Post, and was written by Daniel Butterfield in 1801. It was rather lengthy and formal, as you will hear in this clip, so in 1862 it was shortened to 24 notes and re-named Taps. Melissa Venema is playing it on a trumpet whereby the original was played on a bugle.
